UnidosUS Senior Cabinet Advisor Charles Kamasaki's Book Wins Best Political/Current Affairs Book in English for “Immigration Reform: The Corpse That Will Not Die”

Charles Kamasaki, Senior Cabinet Advisor for UnidosUS recently won the International Latino Book Award’s first place for Best Political/Current Affairs Book in English for his book, “Immigration Reform: The Corpse That Will Not Die.”

The 2019 book details how the current debate over immigration has been influenced by the 1986 Immigration Reform and Control Act (IRCA), which marked the last time a comprehensive immigration reform bill became law. Kamasaki, one of the country’s leading immigration experts who was directly involved in the hearings and debates surrounding the landmark legislation, recounts the roles of key figures and events that went into ultimately passing the reform bill. His book draws on that history to illustrate why immigration remains a constant debate in modern political discourse.

Sign-on Letter for Affiliates: Support Health Equity and Accountability Act

The coronavirus pandemic has shown how important it is for all people—no matter where they were born or where they live in our country—to have easy access to affordable health care and long-standing health disparities that for so long have affected low-income people of color.

One meaningful way to address these health disparities is for Congress to advance the Health Equity and Accountability Act (HEAA) of 2020. In April 2020, HEAA (H.R. 6637) was introduced in the House by Congressman Jesús “Chuy” García on behalf of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC). HEAA received widespread support from more than 100 Members of Congress and 230 local, state, and national organizationsNext week, HEAA will be introduced in the Senate by Senator Mazie K. Hirono (HI). As we collectively work to respond to today’s unprecedented public health and economic crises, HEAA serves as a timely and strategic approach for Congress to provide immediate relief to hardworking Americans and move us forward in the path to eliminate long-standing health disparities magnified by COVID-19.

That is why we ask that your organization endorse HEAA TODAY. Please click here to sign on to the organizational letter of support by Wednesday, September 30th at 5pm ET. Please click here to access UnidosUS’s social media graphics to promote HEAA of 2020. For more information about HEAA, please visit UnidosUS’s HEAA Landing Page

If you have any questions, please reach out to Alberto Gonzalez at agonzalez@unidosus.org.

CDC’s Moratorium on Evictions: Help Spread the Word in your Community

On September 4, a nationwide halt on evictions was put in place by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) to address the current public health and eviction crises.

Please help spread the word. The evictions moratorium covers nearly all rental properties, including single-family homes, mobile homes and apartments. Tenants can receive protection against eviction because of difficulty paying rent, by completing two steps: (1) signing this declaration form and (2) sending it to their landlord. Tenant declaration forms are also available in Spanish and Vietnamese.

Who is protected and what tenants need to know: Please check out helpful resources from our friends at the National Housing Law Project & the National Low Income Housing Coalition in this FAQ and fact sheet for renters.
