UnidosUS President and CEO on Death of Andres Guardado: “This Vicious Cycle of Distrust and Death Must End”

In response to the shooting of Andres Guardado by Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies on Thursday night, UnidosUS President and CEO Janet Murguía issued the following statement:

“Another week and another young man of color is dead at the hands of enforcement. Another week, and a family and a community are still left in the dark as to why it was necessary to use excessive and ultimately deadly force. This is unacceptable, and we join with members of the Congressional Hispanic and Black Caucuses in demanding a full, independent investigation. Andres Guardado, his family, and his community have our deepest condolences and they deserve answers, accountability, and justice from law enforcement and elected officials.”

Commemorating Juneteenth: A Day of Reflection and Intentional Action at UnidosUS

Friday, June 19, marked the date in 1865 when enslaved African Americans in Texas were told of their freedom and that the Civil War had ended, and is referred to as Juneteenth. At UnidosUS, we commemorated Juneteenth with a day of reflection, and intentional actions around race, racism, and unconscious bias, learning and discussing racial justice, black, African American, and Afro-Latino history.

As we continue to take steps to advance our vision of equal opportunity and justice, we'd like to learn more about the racial justice work our Affiliates are taking part in and leading. Our network is strong because we value learning from learning from each other, if you have a resource, program or initiative on racial justice for the Afro-Latinx, Black or African-American communities, please let us know by emailing me

UnidosUS Press Release: DACA is not going anywhere and neither are our DREAMers!

UnidosUS President and CEO Janet Murguía released the following statement in response to the Supreme Court decision that temporarily allows the more than 700,000 young people with DACA to remain in the country:

“Today the Supreme Court sided with the vast majority of Americans by protecting DACA recipients from President Trump’s inhumane mission to deport as many people as possible. This decision is a victory for DREAMers — and for the entire country. DREAMers are already home, building families, creating communities and helping lift up everyone in America. Today's decision validates the need for Congress to act and deliver the lasting decision DREAMers and the millions of American families they are members of deserve. And today we celebrate the commitment and fight of young advocates across the country who have fought so hard to make today possible.”

MasterCard Prepaid Cards: Convenience, Safety and Better Financial Management

Social distancing and other important preventive measures in our everyday lives have impacted the way we handle average financial transactions. With Prepaid Cards, anyone can benefit from electronic payments no matter your credit history, bank account, or debt situation. Prepaid Cards make it possible for millions of people to receive their salary via direct deposit payments, rather than employment checks. Since they work like a bank account, there’s no debt to accrue by using them. This also makes it highly efficient to budget your payments, keep track of your spending, or receive/transfer money to/from friends and family. Plus, they provide loss or theft protection.

Our Partners at Mastercard have information about Prepaid Card Basics and a dedicated page where you can learn more.
