Below you will find the UnidosUS Affiliate Digest, a weekly  newsletter that highlights events, updates, and

resources. We encourage you to share information on upcoming activities or 

 successes at your organization to include in the Digest.

UnidosUS Updates and Events
Will you Join us at this Year’s Changemakers Summit?  

Registration is open for the UnidosUS Changemakers Summit! This March will bring together aspiring activists and community leaders who are committed to advocating for Latinos. After two days of learning and practicing advocacy skills in Washington, DC, the Summit ends with visits to Capitol Hill to meet with members of Congress.

We encourage you to register for the Affiliate All-Inclusive registration option, which includes access to all the 2020 UnidosUS Changemakers Summit events, including the Welcome Reception, Affiliate Leadership Session, Plenary Luncheon, Policy and Community Action Session, Capital Awards gala, Legislative Participants’ Coffee Starter, and Legislative Visits.

UnidosUS Affiliate Leaders (CEO/Executive Directors, Affiliate Board Members, and/or Senior Staff) that register for the All-Inclusive registration and whose organizations are in good standing with membership compliance (dues, recertification, and co-branding) may be eligible for a travel stipend. Additionally, UnidosUS organizations may be able to access up to four stipends to bring participants registered for the Youth Session. Please check out the Affiliate Portal stipend page for instructions on requesting a stipend after completing registration.


Looking Forward to the Affiliate Peer Exchange in San Francisco Next Week!

We are looking forward to seeing many of you next week in San Francisco for the UnidosUS Affiliate of the Year Peer Exchange. We will be gathering on Thursday, January 23 – 24, 2020 to learn from Mission Economic Development Agency's (MEDA) exemplary model and multifaceted approach.

Funding Opportunity: Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Leadership Programs

We invite you to learn about different leadership program opportunities available with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF). These programs are designed to build leadership skills and connect innovators to advance creative, action-oriented solutions to our nation's most entrenched challenges to health. Participants may receive financial support and do not need to relocate. The programs are designed for people working or pursuing research full-time. Applications open for the following programs:

  • Clinical Scholars is seeking teams of health care professionals from all disciplines, including dentists and pharmacists. Deadline: March 11.
  • Culture of Health Leaders is looking for people from all sectors-including business and tech-who are committed to advancing equity, diversity, and inclusion. Deadline: February 19.
  • Health Policy Research Scholars is looking for second- and third-year doctoral students from all fields that have a direct impact on health policy. Deadline: March 11.
  • Interdisciplinary Research Leaders is looking for teams of researchers and community partners focused on community environment and health or families and child health. Deadline: March 11.

Free Training: Comprehensive Overview of Immigration Law (COIL) by the CLINIC – Courses are Open!

If you have new staff or volunteers who are interested in becoming DOJ accredited representatives, they can enroll at no cost in the Comprehensive Overview of Immigration Law (COIL) online course offered by CLINIC. As an UnidosUS Affiliate, you have free access to an intensive six-week e-learning course that provides immigration law advocates and new practitioners with an overview of the fundamentals of immigration law necessary to be an effective practitioner and establish the training background to support an application for the non-attorney immigration law credential called Department of Justice Recognition and Accreditation. 

Who: Staff or volunteers of UnidosUS Affiliates interested in providing immigration legal services. This course is appropriate for the aspiring or new practitioner who is prepared to make the time commitment required to fully participate in this course and complete its requirements.

What: This course has an accelerated pace, including two 90-minute webinars each week, as well as self-directed learning activities to support each course unit. Overall, a course participant should expect to spend between eight and ten hours each week to attend or listen to the weekly webinars and complete the course activities. The webinars will be recorded, allowing students the flexibility to work the course into their busy schedules. Click here for an overview of the course.

RFP: Latino Empowerment and Advocacy Project (LEAP) – Deadline to Submit this Friday, January 17th

As part of UnidosUS’s 2020 Empowerment Priorities and our ¡Adelante!: Moving Us Forward Campaign, UnidosUS is soliciting proposals for its Latino Empowerment and Advocacy Project (LEAP) to provide support for nonpartisan voter registration and Get-Out-The-Vote to expand Latino electoral participation in 2020. LEAP grantees will work to close voter registration gaps in their communities by integrating non-partisan voter engagement activities into their existing programs from February through December 2020.

Due to funding availability, the program will focus on Affiliates and partners in CA, TX, FL, AZ and PA. Affiliates and partners in other states are invited to apply. Please note that funds are limited, and an invitation to apply does not guarantee funding.

UnidosUS Early Childhood Education Workforce Project Webinar – Latina Teachers & the “BA Challenge” 

UnidosUS conducted policy research in Early Childhood Education settings operated by UnidosUS Affiliates to learn more about the working conditions and challenges faced by Latina preschool teachers navigating increasing degree requirements. Through interviews with 26 program administrators, and focus groups with 94 preschool teachers, we obtained in-depth narratives of Latinx voices.

Please join this webinar for a discussion of report findings, policy recommendations, and an opportunity for Q&A. The Webinar will take place on February 25, 2020 at 2:00 p.m. (EST). Register here!

Interested in Becoming a State Lead at this Year’s Changemakers Summit?

Affiliate representatives have the opportunity to serve as State Leads at the Changemakers Summit working with other members of their state's delegation to lead important meetings with legislative representatives. UnidosUS provides support including:

  • Virtual training via webinar to help you organize your state delegation.
  • UnidosUS issue briefings and resources to schedule your visits.
  • On site preparation at Changemakers summit to prepare participants for legislative visits.

This is a great opportunity to collaborate with folks from your delegations and elevate a unified voice on behalf of the Latino community!
