Dear UnidosUS Affiliates,

Below you will find the UnidosUS Affiliate Digest, a weekly 

newsletter that highlights events, updates, and resources. 

We encourage you to share information on upcoming activities or successes at your organization to

include in the Digest.

Fall Affiliate Convenings are Fast Approaching, Reserve Your Spot Today!  
 

Join us in Los Angeles, California on October 8 – 9, 2019 and/or in El Paso, Texas on November 7 – 8, 2019. The Convenings are open to all Affiliates, attendees will have an opportunity to meet for two days and participate in workshops, networking, and leadership development.

We are working with your Affiliate Council representatives to develop dynamic and engaging agendas that will include Affiliate voices on:

·         Integrating Advocacy into Social Services

·         Elevating Responsive Leadership

·         Innovative Solutions to Increasing Housing Access for Latinos

·         Building Community Power as Community Based Organizations

·         And more!

 

A limited amount on travel stipends will be available to Affiliates that are current with membership including co-branding. You will be able to request stipends upon registration. 

 

Register for Los Angeles, CAOctober 8 – 9, 2019. Deadline to register is October 4, 2019!

 Register for El Paso, TX  November 7-8, 2019. Deadline to register is November 1, 2019!

 
UnidosUS Funding Opportunity for Community-based Organizations: Comprando Rico y Sano Program – Informational Webinar September 11th at 2:30 EDT

UnidosUS, with funding support from the Walmart Foundation, will award up to five, or more, new organizations interested in implementing its Comprando Rico y Sano (Buying Healthy and Flavorful Foods) program—led by promotores de salud (community health workers) that seeks to reduce hunger and food insecurity through nutrition education and enrollment assistance in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). New subgrantees will join a shared network of existing community-based organizations and/or community health centers that have implemented the program over the past several years. Proposal is due October 4, 2019 at 11:59 p.m. EDT. An informational webinar will be held on Wednesday, September 11, 2019 at 2:30 p.m. EDT to review this RFP, application process and answer any questions you may have. Opportunities and Resources

 

Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month and the 35th Anniversary of Film “EL NORTE” – Sunday September 15th at 2:00 p.m.

El Norte is a quintessential film that shows a compassionate portrayal of refugees seeking asylum in “El Norte”. This film is more relevant today than when it first debuted in 1984. Gregory Nava, Director of El Norte, will host a screening across the nation on Sunday, September 15th at 2:00 p.m.

Mr. Nava will be donating proceeds from the screening to the victims of El Paso massacre. To watch the trailer or find a theater near you click here.

 
Free Course: Providing Immigration Legal Services – Courses Open on September 16th

Do you have staff that is interested in becoming an accredited representative for providing immigration legal services? They can enroll at no cost in the Comprehensive Overview of Immigration Law (COIL) online course offered by CLINIC. As an UnidosUS Affiliate, you have free access to an intensive six-week e-learning course that provides immigration law advocates and new practitioners with an overview of core immigration law concepts and the practice skills necessary to be an effective advocate. This course is a great way to quickly learn the fundamentals of immigration law necessary to be an effective practitioner and establish the training background to support an application for the non-attorney immigration law credential called Department of Justice Recognition and Accreditation. 

The course opens on September 16th and runs through October 31, 2019.  The webinars are 90 minutes each. Schedule and course outline is available via this link! Call for Gallery Walk Submissions! Register for the Workforce Development Forum
 

The UnidosUS’s 2019 Workforce Development Forum: Latinos @ Work: Developing Talent for Today and Tomorrow offers a platform for stakeholders from across the country to brainstorm and identify strategies to strengthen the Latino and immigrant workforce. We invite you to join us at this two-day conference that will bring together business, government agencies, nonprofit organizations, and training providers to network and learn from each other.

About the Gallery Walk: The Gallery Walk is an opportunity for practitioners to showcase successful program models and share best practices! Gallery Walk proposals are due by Friday, September 27th. Read more about the criteria or to submit an entry click here!

Family Separation in the Trump Era
 

The effects of this administration’s practice of tearing apart families at the border is one that will affect generations to come. In the past few weeks we have seen Trump continue to escalate the attacks on Latinos. At this year’s UnidosUS Annual Conference Trump’s attack on our community were the subject of a session focusing on the six million U.S. – citizen children who have at least one undocumented parent. UnidosUS Affiliate Alivio Medical Center Fights Diabetes with the National Diabetes Prevention Program

 

Affiliate Alivio Medical Center serves a dozen predominantly Latino communities providing a wide range of services including the National Diabetes Prevention Program (National DPP). The funding for the program comes from the  American Association of Diabetes Educators (AADE) under their 1705 Cooperative Agreement with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Community health centers such as Alivio Medical Center is well-positioned to deliver the program in a way that is both linguistically and culturally relevant to the community.
