The Affiliate Leadership Breakfast is a high-level forum on issues of relevance for Affiliate Executive Directors, and their senior leadership and Board members, and provides a dedicated Affiliate-only space to identify ways to strategize with other UnidosUS Affiliate Network organizations.

This year’s Affiliate Leadership Breakfast will feature:

First, UnidosUS President and CEO Janet Murguía will reveal UnidosUS’s 2020 Empowerment Priorities as we prepare to maximize our impact in a potentially watershed election year. We are excited to share this plan, which was informed by Affiliate input received over the past year through the different sessions on UnidosUS’s 50th Anniversary Campaign for Equal Opportunity and the strategy development process.

Second, the strategy session will be followed by a robust discussion, Next Level of Advocacy: Is a Sister 501 (c)(4) In Your Future? In this session, learn from Affiliates who have formed 501 (c)(4) agencies that have allowed them to deepen their work in advocacy and voter mobilization. Together, we will discuss why establishing a sister 501 (c)(4) organization is an important next step for Affiliates to take their advocacy footprint to the next level. Affiliate leaders will share their experiences in establishing 501(c)(4) organizations and the opportunities this entity can bring to engage your communities leading up to the 2020 election and beyond. Whether your organization already has a 501(c)(4) or is thinking about forming one in the future, you will walk away with a greater understanding of how a 501(c)(4) can be a powerful tool to strengthen our collective impact and ability to effect change for the Latino community.

Since this is a space exclusively for Affiliate Executive Directors, senior leadership, and Board members, you are not automatically registered for this event with your conference registration, registration is required, Register here today!

Just Announced – Vision 2020: A Conversation with Candidates

The Road to San Diego Series of Blogs Features the Work of Local Affiliates

In the past few weeks we have been featuring San Diego Affiliates through the UnidosUS blog. California is our largest Affiliate region, and San Diego is home to eight Affiliates supporting the Latino community. Affiliates that serve more than 150,000 clients in San Diego alone, in the areas of civic engagement, education, health, and housing. Check out these highlights from the series:

First in the series were Affiliates San Ysidro Health and South Bay Community Services, featured on the month of June for their work in the LGBTQ community. There two organizations are allies in their LGBTQ work: SYHealth provides health services to this community beyond just HIV prevention, and SBCS provides a safe space for LGBTQ youth to be themselves. The series also highlighted La Maestra Community Health Centers a federally qualified health center that provides culturally and linguistically competent primary care and specialty services. What makes La Maestra stand out is their Circle of Care, which focuses on self-sufficiency as one of its highest priorities for a person’s well-being.

In the issue Developing the leaders of the 21st century we covered King-Chavez Neighborhood of Schools, one of our San Diego Affiliates, that serves over 2,000 students in the Historic Barrio District and Downtown San Diego. Some of these youth attended the Changemakers Summit (pictured above) last March, and they have taken what they learned back to their school to start a club and form future leaders.

On our blog Building leaders in affordable homes: Our Affiliates’ residents speak up we feature Community HousingWorks (CHW) and MAAC, two organizations working to give families opportunity and the means to self-sufficiency.

We hope you are as excited as we are to meet these San Diego super stars!

Affiliates will have an opportunity to choose from more than 25 workshops that tackle issues the Latino community is facing.  On this issue, we are featuring:

  • Collaborative Leadership: How Nonprofits Can Partner for Greater Impact

              Saturday, August 3, 2019 at 9:00 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.

Both the nonprofit sector and philanthropy scene have been changing dramatically over the last several years. Increasingly, funders want to support effective partnerships led by organizations that can manage cross-sector stakeholders to leverage strengths, resources, and expertise to achieve greater impact in their communities. Through an exploration of Promise Neighborhoods grantees and other examples, learn from Affiliate leaders about how they developed successful partnerships by designing collaborative projects to present to funders, managing the application process, and managing reporting. Attendees will receive tips on how to secure and apply for collaborative models effectively and how to avoid and manage some of the challenges. Come prepared with questions and get feedback specific to your organization’s needs!

  • Invisible No More: Making Sure Latinos Count in the 2020 Census

Saturday, August 3, 2019 at 9:00 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.

The 2020 Census will be one of the most important ever for the growing Latino population, and we are facing a major risk of being undercounted. The quality of Census data has implications in the areas of political representation, voting rights, and allocations of billions of dollars of funding for health, education, and housing across the nation. Given aggressive efforts to thwart the Census count among immigrant populations, and new methods of data collection, the stage has been set for a potentially major undercount that would have implications for the well-being of our communities for years to come. This workshop will bring participants up to date with the newest information on preparations for Census 2020 and will discuss strategies to ensure that all Latinos are counted—including best practices for outreach and education, the role of clear and culturally appropriate messaging and messengers, the importance of establishing trusted locations, and continuing advocacy efforts to hold the government accountable for producing an accurate picture of America.

  • All-Star Boards: Practices of Highly Effective Nonprofit Boards of Directors

Saturday, August 3, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

Great boards of directors are essential to strong and healthy nonprofits. Board members have an important responsibility to advance the organization’s mission and to make tough governing decisions. In this workshop, look inside the board room across diverse UnidosUS Affiliates and hear directly from board members who are modeling the type of leadership, engagement, and commitment that moves nonprofits forward. Whether you want to learn how to attract, retain, and inspire board members, or want to pick up tips to prepare you to serve on a board, this workshop will motivate you to build the best board for an organization that matters to you!

  • Delivering Your Mission Through Strategic Planning

Sunday, August 4, 2019 at 9:00 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.

Many community-based organizations are so committed to serving that they don’t make time to step back and see if small changes can make them more impactful and sustainable. With a little strategic planning, organizations can set goals, measure impact, and focus energy. This hands-on workshop, facilitated by an experienced nonprofit management leader, will provide an overview of organizational strategic planning, covering the issues that need to inform or direct the strategic planning process. This workshop will help Latino-serving organizations better understand the process for strategic planning and help define a model for their own organization.

These are only a few examples and you can check out the full 2019 Conference schedule here!

Bring Young Leaders with You to the Future Changemakers Track! (Ages 18-23)

Participating youth will walk away with a stronger sense of how their voices and actions can lead to a great future!
