UnidosUS Updates and Events

Join UnidosUS in Submitting a Comment Letter to HUD by July 9

As you may know, the Trump administration is floating a proposal to prevent "mixed-status" families from getting the pro-rated housing assistance they’re eligible to receive under the law. Today, a low-income family of four containing 2 U.S. citizen kids, a U.S. citizen parent, and an undocumented parent (who is already ineligible for HUD assistance) may  receive pro-rated housing assistance. But the proposed rule would force them to choose between family separation or staying together without much needed housing assistance. This would impact about 25,000 mixed-status families, and an estimated 55,000 children. Latinos comprise about 85% of the people in these families.

UnidosUS together with a number of our Affiliates are fighting this proposed rule. Consider joining us by submitting a public comment of your own. HUD has to read every unique comment, so the more comments we write, the more we can slow down the rulemaking process and hopefully stop this cruel proposed rule from taking effect.

Here are three ways to engage:

Submit a comment from your organization by July 9. You can pull content from UnidosUS’s public comment template and resources and include what is most relevant to your organization’s work, and add details about the communities you serve to make your comment unique.

Encourage individuals to submit shorter comments on our partner’s “Take Action” page (English and Spanish)

Educate yourself and communities by reading our blogpost explaining what this proposed rule is all about.  For those wanting to get more into the nitty-gritty, you can access this recording and slides of a recent webinar by our partners at the National Low Income Housing Coalition.

If you have any questions or if you plan to submit a comment, please email Agatha So at
