The UnidosUS Affiliate Leadership Session at the 2019 Changemakers Summit Recap

The 2020 Census is a year away, and many efforts are already underway to ensure that Latinos are properly counted; this is why UnidosUS decided to bring key players on the Census work to our 2019 Changemakers Summit for the Affiliate Leaderships Session where 110 participants representing 79 Affiliates across the country came to together

UnidosUS held the session for leaders in our Affiliate Network who are grounded in communities that are disproportionately not counted in the Census. Speakers shared with the attendees everything they need to know to make sure our community is accounted for in the 2020 Census. Read more here.

Please Share Your Thoughts on UnidosUS’s Strategy Development – Deadline April 8, 2019

Earlier in the year, the Affiliate ad hoc Committee of the UnidosUS Board of Directors and the UnidosUS Team hosted a webinar wherein we shared the development of UnidosUS’s strategy that will guide our work over the coming years. In an effort to get more detailed feedback from Affiliate leaders about our strategy refinement, the adhoc committee of the board developed an Affiliate Questionnaire designed to give you an opportunity to share specifics about your successes and challenges.  Please take 45-60 minutes to take this questionnaire so that we can effectively shape our strategy in a way that leverages the UnidosUS-Affiliate Partnership. You may start the survey and return to it later if you get pulled away, but we appreciate your thoughtful feedback.

Please complete the questionnaire before April 8, 2019. All affiliates who complete the questionnaire will be eligible to receive one of three UnidosUS 2019 Annual Conference Registrations (randomly chosen from those who respond).

To help you prepare answer in advance, you can access a PDF version of the questionnaire here. Please send any questions or comments to Andrea Sabillon at asabillon@unidosus.org.

Opportunities and Resources

Join UnidosUS and Protect SNAP TODAY!  Deadline Approaching for Public Comment Period, April 2, 2019

Last year, many of you took action to fight for a Farm Bill that included protecting the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). Because of you, over 40 million Americans, including 10 million Latinos, will be able to put food on the table and make ends meet.

But the fight to protect SNAP is not over.

On February 1, the Trump Administration via the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), proposed a rule change that would impose harsher time limits to SNAP recipients and cut $15 billion in SNAP benefits over ten years. The proposed rule would dramatically weaken SNAP and threaten food access for 755,000 low-income people.

We need your voice to protect SNAP! Here’s what you can do:

Submit a public comment at regulations.gov by Tuesday, April 2nd and tell the Trump Administration how much SNAP means to our community. The government is required to read, count, review, and consider all public feedback before issuing a final rule.

UnidosUS can provide you with a template comment that you and your organization can edit to tell your own story about why protecting SNAP is important to you and your community. Please reach out to Alberto Gonzalez at agonzalez@unidosus.org if you would like a template or have any questions.

You may access PDF version of the Request for Proposal here. Proposals are due on April 8, 2019 and decision will be announced by June 14, 2019. If you have any questions, please contact Amy Dominguez-Arms, consultant to the Census Subgroup, at amydarms@gmail.com

How much money will be awarded? We invite proposals for grants of $10,000-$20,000 for a project period of approximately eight months, starting immediately.  Grant awards may vary based on full consideration of the proposals submitted, the number of organizations applying together, and the number of applications received from a particular state.

What’s the deadline? Brief application materials (less than 4 pages) are due by 5:00 pm ET on April 15, 2019.  Grant decisions will be announced by April 30, 2019.

Who should apply? Preference will be given to organizations and coalitions well-positioned to directly interface with immigrant communities, monitor the impact of public charge and other anti-immigrant policies, and diversify the breadth of immigrant and people of color voices in the PIF campaign. Coalitions may be national or state/local in scope, and either broadly serve immigrant communities and/or communities of color or other specific populations. We encourage the submission of joint applications from groups to promote collaboration and coordination.
