New Resources About the National Diabetes Prevention Program

UnidosUS and the American Association of Diabetes Educators are collaborating to raise awareness of the National Diabetes Prevention Program (National DPP) that improves the health and well-being of Latinos at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes. As part of this work, UnidosUS is helping community-based organizations—UnidosUS Affiliates in particular—learn how they can offer the National DPP in their communities and increase physician referrals to the program. Read more about these efforts in our blog and download infographic on the benefits of becoming a National DPP provider. For more information, contact Alejandra Gepp at agepp@unidosus.org

We encourage you to highlight your organization’s partnership with UnidosUS through cobranding. Join us in lifting a unified voice for the Latino community. If you have not had an opportunity to participate in the cobranding questionnaire, we encourage you to take it as we measure where the UnidosUS Affiliate Network is at meeting the goals we shared last fall.

You can add the UnidosUS logo to your website, mention UnidosUS as a partner, describe that you are an UnidosUS Affiliate in your “About Us” section, follow UnidosUS on social media. Please join us in lifting a unified voice for our community. Download the logo today. You can also purchase an UnidosUS reception sign at our Affiliate portal.

If your organization is highlighting our partnership through cobranding, we want to hear about it! Pictures and updates can be sent to Julia DeNamur at jdenamur@unidosus.org or via the questionnaire.

Conexión Américas showed off their cobranded tote bag at the UnidosUS CASA National Institute earlier this month.

Policy Outlook for September 24, 2018
This week’s policy outlook video breaks down what you need to know about the proposed “public charge” change.

Response to Trump Administration's Proposed Change to "Public Charge" Policy

On Sunday, UnidosUS responded to the Trump administration’s proposal to radically change the existing “public charge” policy to punish legal immigrants and restrict family-based immigration, one of the cornerstones of our country’s immigration system. Public charge is a decades-old term and policy that forms part of the green card application process and examines an applicant’s means to support themselves over the long term. Yet, Trump’s proposed rule takes the policy well beyond its original purpose in an effort to block the door to the legal immigration system for America’s working families. (Read the full press-statement here)

This proposed rule has not gone into effect, and we do not want families at risk foregoing programs for which they currently qualify. Based on our quick analysis of what the released draft includes, whatever change takes place will not be retroactive and it will take time for changes to be implemented. Impacted programs are based on the immigrant person using that program.

UnidosUS will be sharing talking points, resources, and ways for Affiliates to participate in the public comment period which we believe will be a 60-day period that will commence 24 hours after the rule is released. Please be on the lookout for a webinar for Affiliates that wish to engage in public comment or take further action, like writing an op-ed, as we work with you to stand up for immigrant families. Please stay close to our social media channels to help us amplify a unified message.
Today is National Voter Registration Day!

Yesterday, we sent Affiliates a tool-kit so that you can participate with us in encouraging all eligible citizens to register to vote. Be sure to use the hashtag #NationalVoterRegistrationDay with any social media posts you will be sharing about getting your community to registered and ready to vote.

Join UnidosUS in registering new voters, you can add the “Become a Voter” button onto your website. We can share a unique link just for your agency, so we can track how many voters registered through your site. You will be receiving an email with a link to add the voter widget. If you are interested in participating, please contact me.

Students throughout the Affiliate Network have been helping each other become civically engaged by making sure that eligible students have the knowledge and tools to be able to register to vote. With the High School Democracy Project, a six-lesson high school curriculum that informs of the political process and how to get registered to vote.  Read full blog here.
