Below you will find the UnidosUS Affiliate Digest, a weekly newsletter that highlights events, updates, and resources. We encourage you to share information on upcoming activities or successes at your organization to include in the Digest.

 Register for Conference Today!

Join us at the 2018 UnidosUS Annual Conference and 50th Anniversary Celebration taking place in Washington, DC, from July 7th to 10th.   You can register here today and remember you will need your new Affiliate ID number that is available at our Affiliate portal. For instructions on how to find your affiliate ID please click here. A friendly reminder that rates to Conference will go up after May 6, 2018 and reservation deadline for the guaranteed discounted rate of $219 plus tax is Friday, June 8, 2018.

Call for Entries: The Helen Rodríguez-Trías Health Award 

Apply by Friday, May 18, 2018

The award recognizes UnidosUS Affiliate organizations with exceptional leadership, commitment to advancing health equity, and improving the health and well-being of Latinos through the implementation of innovative strategies and practices within local communities. Organizations that have worked to transform systems and programs through culturally relevant outreach, education or care coordination efforts that have resulted in improvements to accessible, equitable, and quality health or health care, including addressing social determinants of health, are encouraged to apply. The award includes a $5,000 cash prize and will be presented at the Helen Rodríguez-Trías Award Reception, as part of the 2018 UnidosUS Annual Conference taking place July 7–10 in Washington, DC. FEMA Webinar- Helping Your Community Get Ready for Hurricanes

 

The 2018 Atlantic Hurricane Season officially begins June 1. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Center for Faith Based and Neighborhood Partnerships and the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) Individual and Community Preparedness Division invite you to participate in a hurricane preparedness webinar. On Tuesday, May 8, learn innovations in preparedness that you can implement in your community. Participants will hear from local and national leaders. Attendees can engage one another in a conversation with the goal of building resilience for the coming hurricane season.

Federal Reserve Board is accepting applications for Community Advisory Council (CAC)
 The Federal Reserve Board is accepting applications from individuals who wish to be considered for membership on the Community Advisory Council (CAC).

The CAC advises the Board on issues affecting consumers and communities. It is made up of a diverse group of experts and representatives of consumer and community development organizations and interests, including affordable housing, community and workforce development, small business, and asset and wealth building. CAC members meet semiannually with members of the Board of Governors in Washington to provide a range of perspectives on the economic circumstances and financial service needs of consumers and communities, with a focus on the concerns of low- and moderate-income consumers and communities.

 

CASA Request for Proposal is open! - Deadline May 28, 2018
 

UnidosUS encourages Affiliate middle schools and community-based organizations to apply to implement UnidosUS’ ongoing service-learning initiative, Cultura, Aprendizaje, Servicio, Acción- CASA. This initiative is supported by and implemented in partnership with State Farm’s Community Education Foundation. Selected school sites and community-based organizations will attend trainings on culturally-relevant, service-learning models and implement service-learning modules and actions that will culminate with one, community-wide, signature project. The CASA project will be implemented from August 2018 to June 2019.

Deadline: Monday, May 28, 5:00 PM PST

Grant Period: August 2018- June 2019

As shared on the webinar, in immigration law, a public charge refers to a person “likely to become dependent” on the government for financial or material support. The webinar discussed the possible impacts of the changes. The goal was to discuss the state of play on this important topic, how UnidosUS sees opportunities for us to advocate together, and how we should be engaging our community.

 This week's policy update dives into work requirements in safety net programs like SNAP, medicaid and housing assistance.

Weekly Legislative Outlook

The House and Senate are both out of session this week. A few things to keep an eye on; The House is looking at the week of May 14th to vote on the Farm Bill, Congress is near the passage of a bipartisan deal to exempt dozens of banks from parts of the Dodd-Frank Act, and discussions about a second phase of tax cuts continues.

This week’s Legislative Outlook will provide details on what to watch out for this week.
